General description of KreaTV 4

Note that features described in the text below may be optional. Documentation is only provided when the option is included.

Let us introduce KreaTV 4! The leap from KreaTV 3.x has brought many improvements to the software stack.

The graphics handling has been thoroughly redesigned to make the graphics stack thinner and faster. Hardware acceleration through blitter is available to speed it up further. Graphics can now also be shown in high definition.

The public interface TOI has undergone major redesign and the version is now TOI 2. This means many APIs have been altered. The changes affect many services in KreaTV. Porting an existing application or portal from TOI 1 to TOI 2 should be straightforward given the instructions in this document.

SVG support has been added as an alternative to HTML. SVG is a faster way of drawing graphics, it has a lower memory consumption, better performance, scalable graphics and generally gives more freedom of design compared to HTML. KreaTV 4 still supplies the option of Webkit for those who prefer working in HTML.

DLNA DMP functionality was added in KreaTV 4.2 and all codecs and containers supported by the set-top box will also be supported in DLNA. KreaTV 4 can play both video and audio as well as displaying pictures through DLNA. Support for Windows Media 9 and MP4 Container has also been added.

The media player in KreaTV 4 supports time shifting (pause live TV), making the manual time shifting of KreaTV 3.8 a thing of the past. The new service Adaptive video mode is made to facilitate changing between resolutions of a video output as well as automatic aspect ratio conversion, clipping and scaling.

Integrated Teletext support is now available and there is support for the music streaming service Spotify since KreaTV 4.2. This was also the first KreaTV version to have support for the VIP1853 IP-STB.

DVR recording capabilities have been extended for high performance set-tops by increasing the maximum number of recorders that can be run simultaneously. Currently, VIP28x3 models support up to 3 recordings while playing back a fourth program and VIP2952 supports up to 4 recordings while playing back a fifth. You can refer to kreatv-option-dvr for additional information on how to setup DVR capabilities for your platform.

DVR and Timeshift capabilities has been, with some limitations, extended to USB storage devices. See USB DVR/Timeshift Support for details.
